Aiming for the Top 5

Jean-Luc Pisson may be in his fifties, but he is nevertheless a rally-raid newcomer. It is only in 2018, at the age of 50, that he discovered the joys of the discipline thanks to a gift from his friends. That year, he participated in the Raid de l'Amitié (AIO) where he met many Dakar regulars. He enjoyed the experience and decided to enter the Turkmenistan Rally aboard a BMW X3, before going on the tackle the Africa Eco Race in 2019. Encouraging results led to him to enter the Dakar but a few weeks before the start of the second Saudi Arabian edition his doctor informed him that he needed a quadruple bypass. His cardiologist was sceptical about his chances of racing again. But Jean-Luc hung in there, resumed cycling in July, took part in the 24 heures de Paris in September, then in the Andalucia Rally in October and finally the Dakar in 2021. A penalty wiped out his hopes of a podium finish in the T3 category, and he ended up in 5th place for his first participation in this very popular category. At the end of the season, to prepare his second Dakar, he entered the Rallye du Maroc but didn’t make it to the finish. 21st in the 44th Dakar with Jean Brucy, he took 12th place in the W2RC ranking in the Light Prototypes category. He finished 12th in the T3 category on the second round in Abu Dhabi and is currently 8th in the provisional standings. On the Rallye du Maroc, he’ll be racing with a new co-driver, Cédric Duplé, who already had two Dakars under his belt. Hailing from the south west of France, Duplé started the Dakar in 2017 alongside Philippe Croizon, a quadruple amputee who has also swam the English Channel. The PH-Sport Zephyr driver has two rounds left to hope to get closer to the Top 5 before next season.
